Defining his sexuality didn’t make sense until his best friend spelled it out.
Doug Archer did some pretty idiotic things in the first eight weeks of his junior year of college. First, he kissed his gay best friend, and second, he kissed a guy he’d mistaken for a girl. Not stellar moments for Doug. If he isn’t careful, he’ll lose his spot on the soccer team to the new freshman, or worse, he might misconstrue his new friend Rob’s overly affectionate tendencies for flirting. But if Doug isn’t bothered by another guy’s attention, and he normally dates girls, does that mean he’s gay or bisexual?
Sam Garber suppressed his same-sex attraction his entire life. His father told him it was immoral, and Sam did everything he could to bury his feelings. However, after meeting Doug at a party and kissing him, Sam can’t think of anything else. He decides dating girls is the best way to keep his secret hidden. With playoffs in sight, this is no time to think about guys in any other context than soccer. Only neither boy anticipates the difficulty in suppressing his attraction for another jock!
Wade Kelly out did it with this book. This is just simply an incredibly emotional read and I would suggest this book to anyone who wants an amazing read.
Doug is a soccer star in college. He has Ana amazing family and a great group of friends that he not only grew up with but also attends college and plays soccer with. He has had many girlfriends in years past but has never fallen in love with anyone. Over the years he has momentarily questioned his attraction towards guys but has always pushes it to the side as if it was nothing more then a fleeting thought.
Sam met Doug at a party at his cousins house. When they met, Sam was wearing a dress because of a dare/bet that his cousins pull off every year and this year it was his turn. When they first meet Sam does not realize that Doug believes that he is a girl but finds out not long after the fact. It left things awkward between them seeing as how Doug kisses him when Doug still beloved him to be a girl.
Neither realized they would be seeing one another again so soon after the fact but fate happens and they are now in the same college and on the same soccer team. Even though Doug has never really took in stock in him being attracted to other guys, he cannot forget his time with Sam. Also the attraction is still very much there between them.
Slowly the two become friends and then later on they kiss again. In turn this really freaks out Sam because he only knows what he has been told by his father and he fears him. Same father will not accept him as gay and has abused him in the past to get his point across.
Sam knows that he is in love with Doug but he has a hard time coming to terms with it because of his past with his father. These two men have a rocky road ahead of them but with the help of their family, friends, and teammates they stand a chance at finding true happiness tougher.
I truly enjoyed reading this book. It was packed full of so many different emotions. I found myself being upset with Sam at some points in the book but also sympathetic in others. Both Doug and Sam had to go through such an emotional roller coaster to be able to get on even ground together. And my heart truly broke for Sam and the abuse that he went through with his dad. I love that their teammates were all supportive and stood by them against homophobia. This book was such an incredible read and had such an impact on me while reading it. Wade Kelly truly has an amazing book on their hands that I believe that many people will feel the same impact that I did from reading it.
