Summary Review
Another glimpse into the HEA of Kurt and Jake from P.D. Singer’s Mountain series which, whilst it was diverting and nice to read about these characters again, had very little to add to their relationship.

THE REVIEW
It’s the summer after the end of the previous Kurt and Jake story, Mistletoe on the Mountain, and Kurt’s dragged Jake off to a rodeo in a nearby town. When Kurt brings Jake into a ‘restricted access’ section, Jake becomes increasingly worried that they’re going to get their heads kicked in by irate cowboys.
Those of you who have been following my reviews of P.D. Singer’s Mountain series will know that I love Jake and Kurt. Like the other books this short is told in the first person from Jake’s point of view. Jake’s an engaging character and I liked the nervy way he worries to himself over Kurt’s behaviour. It was interesting to note that whilst we get an awful lot of Jake’s anxious thoughts, he actually barely speaks during the story. Instead it is Kurt who does most of the talking, which only increases Jake’s nervousness as Kurt shoots his mouth off to the burly cowboys.
The story itself is a bit of fun, and it was nice to see a little snippet into the lives of Jake and Kurt, especially now that they are both openly out of the closet. However, I was a little disappointed that the story doesn’t actually give us any greater insight into their relationship, which has passed well beyond the ‘I love yous’ and into the comfort of a committed relationship. In many ways then, this was a story for the fans. A little taste of their HEA for those who want more. Personally speaking, I’m not keen on follow on shorts which don’t advance the relationship of the heroes, hence the reasonably low grade for the story. However, if you’re so desperate for more of Kurt and Jake and want to read an amusing story with a tender sex scene, then this story should be just your cup of tea.

That’s what I couldn’t put my finger on – it didn’t really move their own story along. I would’ve liked this better as a scene in a longer work.

I agree, it was nice to read more of Jake and Kurt, but this would have worked better in a longer book where there was an added development to the relationship. I’m not sure whether there’s anywhere else for these characters to go now though, so doubt that they’ll be another book for them.
I did learn a bit more about Kurt and his family, and loved how he one-upped the cowboy. Paybacks are so sweet. Jake and Kurt have settled into domestic bliss so nicely, as shown by Jake’s careful attention to Kurt in the end. Sigh.

That final sex scene was rather lovely. I liked that Kurt realised that he’d been a bit of an idiot but that Jake still loved him for it anyway :).
