So now we know what frottage is, but why don’t we read more about it in M/M romances? These books are about gay men who in RL practice frotting a lot. Is the absence of frotting due to not enough authors knowing about it? I think it’s pretty hot and sensuous whenever I read about it, and I’ve always wondered why there isn’t more frotting in M/M.
Why am I writing about frotting today? Because TJ, one of the guest reviewers who is a very cool gay dude, said this in a recent review of Out of Bounds by Viki Lyn:

On a more serious note, when you read as many of these books as I do for review and for pleasure (not all books are pleasurable), 🙂 there is a need to keep the romance hot or I become bored. I’m sure that other people who read more than a couple books a week will eventually want more excitement and fun in their books and I think that frotting is fun.
I read “Get What You Need” last night, cover to cover, because it was just so fricking hot! And, OK, it’s even better when read aloud. I read Jay’s scenes and Kit (the bf) read Patrick’s. That was incendiary! LOL Ahem, it was also a very well written story with compelling characters. 😉
Force of Law by Jez Morrow uses frot both as a plot point and to show (rather than tell) how the relationships between protagonists are working.
It’s a very good book as well.

I wrote one into the story currently on sub, got hot myself writing it (whoop!), and then one of my crit girls was like “oh seriously? they did not just come in their jeans”. Because I mainly write historical fantasy, and I haven’t run across any examples of gay frottage prior to the twentieth century. (Somebody *please* rush in and tell me I’m wrong.)
One thing I *have* tried to include is intercrural sex (i.e. a penis rubbing between the legs), which has sadly fallen out of fashion, but which was quite fashionable for many centuries. Parhelion’s “An Angel in Hollywood” (set in 1927) has both frottage and intercrural sex.

I had no idea that there was no mention of frottage between gay men in previous centuries. I would have thought that frotting was a way for a cheap thrill between the guys as they drank ale in one of those clubs they all seemed to favour, because it had the advantage of not taking their clothes off, giving them probable deniability. LOL
Maybe you should think of that for your next historical novel. It makes sense to me in an age where gay sex was punishable by death, that a quick grope or rub would be a great alternative when full out sex wasn’t possible.
The difficulty with sex (from a historical novelist’s point of view) is that it’s so culture-specific. For example, human impulses toward SM must be universal, but there’s no solid evidence of SM as it’s commonly practiced today (a private arrangement between two individuals, for sexual pleasure) before the seventeenth century. Undoubtedly it existed, but it wasn’t part of the overall cultural pattern.
I have no problems with writing about sex that isn’t standard for its time, if it fits the characters. I’ve written a Victorian story about gay fisting; there’s no historical evidence for the existence of gay fisting before the twentieth century, but it seemed to me that, if anyone was practicing it in the past, it would have been this particular character. 🙂 But it seems to me that there’s too much of this going in m/m historical writing: authors transplanting sexual activities that are common in the twenty-first-century into past societies where such sexual activities, if they existed, were rare. I think it’s more fun to write about sexual activities that are rare now but were common then.
So I’m hoping that somebody here (I’m sure there are folks who have done *much* more research on this topic than I have) will produce evidence of historical frottage, since it’s not as well known now as it should be.

I’ll check to see what Lee’s sources are. 🙂 It’s been . . . oh, at least five years since I did in-depth research on the history of gay sex, so perhaps Lee has turned up historical material that’s more recently been unveiled . . . or (all to likely) noticed something I overlooked in my research.
After talking to Lee, I did a bit of very hasty research (of which I’ll spare you the links) and concluded the following: Intercrural sex – which some people consider a form of frottage – seems to have been the most popular form of skin-to-skin rubbing till the nineteen century. It was established as such in classical times, when penetration (in this case, of the thighs) had high symbolic importance.
I would have expected to see the great change in favor of frottage proper occur in the eighteenth century, when so much else was changing in the homosexual world. But Ric Norton, who has done more study of eighteenth-century English homosexuality than anyone else I know, doesn’t see this reflected in the documents of the time; he says references to frottage were rare. On the other hand, he reports that frottage was quite popular in the late Victorian times, which is when the word first turns up in English literature.
What’s interesting is that the situation is quite different with lesbianism. Lesbians were assumed, in classical times, to be doing frottage. So what I think we have here is an elevation of the penis (so to speak): a long-standing belief among men that penetrative sex is all-important, even if it’s only thigh-penetrative.
Now, I’m talking about cultural trends alone, which are often quite different from what the actual practices were. We have so little documentation on homosexuality before the twentieth century that I’d be hesitant to make any conclusions about what was actually going on, frottagewise, without some heavy-duty research.

I think that frotting can convey love, adoration, intimacy and bonding sometimes better than full on penetrative sex. I seem to remember in Marie Sexton’s Promises that Matt and Jared frotted quite often, because Matt felt closer to Jared than when they had penetrative sex….

Frottage: the one and only explicit (if moderately) sex scene in Tigers and Devils definitely falls into that category (“Yeah, but I didn’t think you were going to make me come in my jeans,” he complained.)

Having just re-read the Adrien English series I can tell you Josh does a lot of frottage type scenes.

Etymology… I have no idea whether it was a common term in English, but since it means ‘rubbing’ in French and most upper-class Englishmen were taught some French as a matter of course, AND since my character fancies himself a man of the world and probably frequented high-class brothels on both sides of the Channel… I thought it was a reasonable extrapolation. The sexual use (as opposed to rubbing inscriptions fromtombstones) came into English officially in 1933 according to the online etymology dictionary, but guys who did it were called “frotteurs” in print in 1892,

so I have to guess that the word was in use for quite awhile previous… though probably not in print in books produced for a general readership–private printing, more likely–and I’m willing to bet that the word was used with that meaning in French for a long time before that. (How long has “soixtante-neuf” been in use?)
What we need is someone who can do a little etymological research in French.
As for the practice… I suspect that has been going on since long before any language.

Hi! I’ve been dealing with a new puppy along with other things, and haven’t had much time to visit blogs. I don’t remember a pup being this much work, but it’s been 18 years or so.
If someone’s got access to the online Oxford English Dictionary, that might have something. My Webster’s Unabridged has a definition but not a date, and even English Through the Ages failed me on this one–not too surprising for a French word.
I’m guessing that since there would not have been any penetration or even (necessarily) skin-to-skin contact, this would have been counted as “unclean behavior” rather than sodomy… sort of the way “straight” men on the down-low don’t count their encounters as “gay sex” because they aren’t penetrated. Humans have a remarkable ability to rationalize, and I’m sure a lot went on that nobody wrote home about.
