Great Expectations by Ethan Day

Ethan Day is like an old friend on the site. He takes as much abuse as he gives and he’s not afraid to throw a punch or two – I know …. I have been on the receiving end of many of his ill timed upper cuts that went in the wrong direction.  😉 He may not know how to fight but he sure can write and I have yet to read anything he has written that I didn’t enjoy tremendously and which made me laugh out loud. His characters are unusual and you would be hard pressed to find clones of them anywhere else but in his books.

His newest book Life in Fusion, the sequel to Sno Ho which I read almost a year ago, is scheduled to be released next Tuesday, November 30, and it’s probably his most anticipated book  to date because it’s his first sequel. I asked him to write a post about Life in Fusion and how it relates to his life. This is how Ethan sees life – in Technicolor, no less. 🙂

####

When I began thinking about what kind of post I wanted to prepare for the release of Life in Fusion, my sequel to the short story,  Sno Ho from MLR Press – one word popped into my mind: Expectations. We all have them or suffer from them as the case may be. In the new book, Boone certainly does, and they aren’t the hopeful or winsome variety one normally attributes to romantic comedy, as his come wrapped in the form of fearing the worst. But the whole idea that we either saddle others or get saddled with a sometimes unattainable anticipation is nuts, right? One would think so, but the fact we all do it makes each and every one of us either collectively crazy or more alike than we’d care to believe. Some take comfort in the things that tie us together while others feel strangled by them.

For me, the act of expectation began very early-on. I was a little boy forever walking around with my head in the clouds, imagining what was just around the corner was sure to be the best, most exciting thing ever! Getting grounded was never much of a punishment since I usually managed to have plenty of fun playing by myself in my bedroom. I was most definitely a daydream believer who had entire stories about far off people and places unfolding in the back of my mind. It’s difficult to get lonely when you have all these other people in your head. In fact, I often found my time alone more rewarding than my time outside with the other kids – unless we were all playing make believe and I was both director and screenwriter. While I would never give any of that up, considering my childhood seemed laced with the mystical and magical, it was the beginnings of a lifetime spent looking around at my actual surroundings thinking, Dude…this is it?

That’s not to say all my real-life experiences lacked luster. Those of you who read my post a few months back called French Kisses know how incredible my first man-on-man lip action wound up being. In fact, sex in general, was way better than I ever imagined it could be. Romance perhaps not, but sex…definitely. For some reason, there are aspects of the physical not even my imagination can outshine. Strangely enough they often wind up being the oddest things. One of my first BF’s from back in the day was the creator of one of those better than imagined examples. We’ll call him Georgie for the purposes of this post since he had that whole George Michael, I Want Your Sex/Faith thing going on. He wore the tight faded jeans with the wire frame sun glasses and had that tanned skin, with the impeccably manicured stubble. I’m sure you all remember the look. For anyone sitting there thinking, It must have been before my time…totally hating you! ; )

While kissing Georgie always to led to a multitude of other gush worthy activities – don’t even go there people – anyone who’s ever made it with a guy who has stubble, knows it can be murder on your mouth. Seriously…there were times I looked like I’d gotten the lower half of my face stuck in a pool drain. My friends were likely calling me Brillo-Lips behind my back. Nevertheless, I had a smile on my face thanks to the constant, all day reminder of what it felt like to have Georgie’s lips on mine – totally the gift that kept on giving, by the way.

But what are expectations, really? For me, they’re just fantasies with better P.R. – a more tolerated, and less likely to get you mocked by others, form of inner-entertainment. We all have the capacity for a little delusional bliss, at least I hope we do, but can we go too far? The answer to that question likely depends on each individual. But ask anyone who ever decided to meet someone in real life that they met online, and I’ll lay odds you’ll find a story there about disappointment. I’ll even double down, and declare that part, if not most of their disappointment, sprang from discovering the real person didn’t live up to their inner-imagined hype. We just can’t help ourselves, and perhaps that’s okay. We as a species likely need it, and frankly, every once in a great while, we’re pleasantly surprised when reality either lives up to or surpasses even our wildest dreams.

I’ve become aware over the past year that I am now sometimes the target…um…I mean recipient of such anticipation. My reputation precedes me, and it isn’t always apparently appreciated, lol. While I find it exceedingly difficult to think of myself as the kind of author who has readers that expect things from me, I have discovered that some do. I tend to think of everyone I come into contact with like a friend, as opposed to a reader, fan, or angry romance-reading-wing-nut with an axe to grind because of the way my last book ended. : ) So, if there’s a Kathy-Bates-Misery-chick out there with an evil plan and a hatchet, let me save you a little time – I’m a giant baby when it comes to pain – so no need to go snapping any limbs, yo! I’ll cave in the time it takes Taylor Swift’s next relationship to bite the dust. I love that girl, but man…does she not have any gays who’ll give her a good shake? I’ve had coherent thoughts that’ve lasted longer than one of her relationships. Difficult to believe, I know…considering I just went off on a Taylor tangent in the middle of this post.

But I’ve been very lucky for the most part, having had plenty of good reactions, with some folks even writing to say thanks for making them laugh or that they appreciated my book as it provided a much needed distraction from their real lives. To those of you who feel that way, let me just add – I feel ya. I’ve always been the type of guy who found real life to be less than – like an old Technicolor movie musical that’s become damaged or faded over time and is now in desperate need of some restoration. Real life should be Gene Kelly leaping through the air in cotton-candy-colored-clarity, damn it. It looks so pretty in my head!!

Unfortunately, I’ve also been a dismal disappointment to others. Apparently these folks never received a single memo from any of my ex’s. Go figure? It’s disappointing but unavoidable, I suppose. Sometimes I feel especially bad, as the experience with one of my books appeared to have been almost painful for the poor dears. One unlucky soul even commented:

I totally disliked the way this book was written, and this childish drama and whoring around, Jeez truly what a bad story. Blahh why did I even read it.

If I knew of a way to give this individual their time back, I most certainly would. The childish drama I can totally see…we are talking about me after all. : ) But I’m a little lost when it comes to the whole whoring around part. Kinda makes you wonder where they get their views, with regard to what modern relationships are all about. Apparently, they’re still living life on Little House on the Prairie…you know, back in the day when people had to walk for days on end in order to find the good dick. I mean really…I’m expecting Half-pint to come strolling out the barn door any minute, screaming, “Pa!” I’d stick with the closest dick I could find too, if it required that much cardio in order to get something different.

Now in case you’re sitting there reading this and thinking, Hello…judgie much? That’s not my intention…just me trying to take my lemons and turn them into lemonade by making some of you laugh. And seriously, if I can laugh about it, why shouldn’t you?

And don’t act like you didn’t find that Half-pint crack funny. But if that still isn’t enough and you’re continuing to shake your head at me, let me fully admit that I’m no better than anyone else when it come to unrealistic expectations. I can be the worst – especially when it comes to the menz. That moment when I see a guy for the first time, thinking he’s hot or cute or has a certain something I’ve not noticed in anyone else before – perhaps it’s nothing more than a feeling – or quite possibly merely indigestion.

Despite my best intentions, begging myself to please – for once, refrain from doing it – I almost always, without fail, wind up doing so anyway. It’s true people, in the time it takes me to cross the room I’ll have already worked out who he is, what he does, the sound of his voice, the smell of his skin, not to mention where he’s been and where he’s going…hopefully somewhere with me. I’ll imagine that he likes to lounge in bed wearing nothing but his skivvies and a smile as he reads the Sunday paper. Maybe he’s the kind of guy who carries on the tradition started by his mother – throwing elaborately themed birthday parties for himself every year – and of course…that his idiot ex-boyfriend didn’t appreciate him the way I would.

You’d think that would be more than enough to fill the apparent void in the time-space continuum, which must’ve occurred in order for me to have worked all that out in such a short amount of time. But alas no – without further ado comes the biggest fantasy of all…the grand poo-bah of all my otherwise zany delusions. Drum roll please…that he’ll find all my inner-crazy to be charming and endearing. You know…the way Wade does Boone. They don’t call it fiction for nuthin’, LOL!  For anyone left out there who still disapproves, take heart in the fact that I’ll likely NEVER find another boyfriend after coping to the Intel above. That’ll learn me! ; )

With Life in Fusion the age old question is being put to the test. Can an over-achieving, single-minded control freak and a wise-cracking, devil-may-care, rogue make a go of it? We all know for a fact that opposites can attract, but if it’s true that every action has an opposite and equal reaction, then surviving the expectations of the ones who are supposed to love us the most, may prove more than either man ever imagined. For those who wind up reading the book…time will tell.

With that I’ll leave you to contemplate the complexities of life…either in or out of a novel. I showed you mine…so feel free to amuse me with tales of your own self destructive behavior. LOL! Come on…you know you want to…everybody’s doin’ it!! : )

Much Love

Ethan

  • Hi guys
Ethan asked me to tell you that he’ll be working until about 1.00 P.M today therefore he will be unable to respond to your comments until then.

  • Huh. Half Pint. Seriously I hadn’t had that nickname pass through my consciousness in decades, and I was happy to leave it that way. Thanks for nothing.

As for Taylor Swift, she’s 20, she’s supposed to have a new boyfriend every five minutes. I seriously hope my daughter isn’t settled down with one guy forEVAH at that age. BTDT, got the divorce to show for it. Ohhh, bitter much? Nah. Young people are supposed to be stupid, better at 20 than 40.

I do have an active life in my head, but it usually manages to stay there. I’ve met 40 or so internet friends over the last two years and I have to say they all lived up to my expectations, however they weren’t internet love interests. That might be another story and many of them I’d known on-line for 2-5 years. Not much is hidden in that time. LOL I know all the quirks and love them anyway. Wouldn’t wanna live with them though. 🙂 Nor likely they me.

  • I must say that you’re even better in person, Ethan. Not that I expected you to have horns or anything, but rarely are people even better than you’ve pictured. You are, and I’m proud to call you a true friend.

    • Are you saying he’s better looking in person Carol? Damn! Now he’ll be even worse. I’m kidding – he’s one of the nicest people I know, online and in RL, but don’t tell him I said so or I’ll never hear the end of it. 🙂

  • And don’t tell him that I told you he is incredibly handsome, fun and takes forever in the bathroom primping each morning. LOL I guess the result is worth it, but I have a feeling I’d love him even without the perfect hair. Ethan makes me laugh more than any person I’ve met. He’s also incredibly kind and hard headed at times, but I think that goes with being a man.

    • LOL! It was a little like having a slumber party each night in our hotel room last month in New Orleans. We didn’t braid one anothers hair, but we did talk about cute boys and stuff. : )

I’m only hard headed in the mornings…before my diet coke’s kick in. : ) And I only spend that much time on my hair because it’s the only thing I have any REAL control over! LOL

  • I got off early!!! Well, okay…let me rephrase – I left work early!!! It’s a Christmas Miracle!! : )

No more Little House references for Tam…got it. : )

Aww shucks, Carol…that was sweet. : ) Many thanks…right back at ya…big hugs and I heart you too!

LOL – I’m pretty sure she referring to my sparkling personality and rapier wit, Wave. Something’s gotta make up for that ugly mug of mine. ; )

  • Fishing for compliments? Ugly mug, aaa-ha. It’s you in that picture above, Huh?

Ethan, you’re mean…now I’ll have to read your book and the prequel most probably too. Seriously, an “over-achieving, single-minded control freak and a wise-cracking, devil-may-care, rogue?” That would be me’n my man, dude, and it’s been working for over a decade now. It’s not fiction, mind you, so…there’s one for you out there, trust me. Yet, when in comes to Mr. Right, be careful what you wish for, for he might be sticky. Not that I’m complaining. Sticky can be sooo good.

    • Fishing for compliments….me? I would totally never! : ) That is me in the picture Feliz. And it’s been put through about five or six filters so it’s nice and fuzzy. Basically, that’s what I look like to someone who’s intoxicated, LMAO!

I hope you enjoy the books!

      • Ethan

Someone (I won’t say who because he would kick my ass) thought the picture was a fake and that I was putting one over on your fans. I knew about the hair and primping in the mornings before Carol said anything, so it was no surprise when I saw the curly locks – a little more curl and you could pass for a black man Ethan. 🙂

314 fricking pages Ethan?????? What have I ever done to be punished by you and Boone? I’m starting LiF tomorrow so that I can write the review by Tuesday. This had better be the best book that you ever wrote or you’ll hear from me and read about it in my review. 🙂

        • *314 fricking pages Ethan??????* Wave? Ummm, I think if Ethan hadn’t given the readers that much they would have attacked him and probably me.

        • LOL! If we were going to try putting anything over on anyone we would have used a hot, half naked guys pic and said it was me. : ) (Only half naked because I’m an author not a porn star.)

It’s 314 pages of FUN!! And I have no doubt I’ll hear about it. : )

        • 314 PAGES!!! HALLELUJAH!! There’s no such thing as too many pages in an Ethan Day book! By now I’ve read Sno Ho so many times it might as well be 1,000 pages long.

And you are in BIG trouble Miss Wave! And don’t pretend that you don’t know what I’m referring to. So I think you should make it up to me by giving me Life in Fusion! 😉

      • Jeez, Ethan, I would’ve thought a guy with your savvy would know Vaseline is good for something other than desperation lube. Try smearing it on a camera lens; it works wonders (and works even bigger wonders if you smear it on your face AND the camera lens–something I learned from my pal Liz Taylor when she was shooting her White Diamonds commercials *g*).

I really have to follow through with my intention to start reading your stuff. A spoonful of humor helps the holidays go down. But reading 314 pages at my desktop? O_o Uh…you got anything shorter, just to keep me from going postal?

        • Hey K.Z.! I had heard that about Vaseline – but I’ll leave that story for another day and another blog post, lol.

And I’m with you, still reading on my desk top or lap top. I seriously need an e-reader but I can’t seem to figure out which one I want. There’s so many options out there now!

The shortest thing I have is Sno Ho, which is the pre-quel to Life in Fusion. It’s around 36k. Self Preservation is next at around 55k.

Thanks for taking the time to stop by and comment! : )

    • Feliz, TJ and I very highly recommend you do not read Sno Ho & Life in Fusion. It’s bad enough we’ve got to fight off Lynn and Wave to get at Ethan…’s books, we can’t be having to wrestle you, too! 🙂

  • Hugs Ethan. Expectations…. Hm….

Honestly, if you keep doing what you’re doing, you’re going to make more people happy than not. It takes all kinds to write, all kinds to read, and not all meet in the middle. Though I’d also like to know what decade that “whoring around” commentor is stuck in. LOL Puh-leaze. There’s more sex and bed hopping on prime time TV than in most erotic (any genre really) book. (I think Dallas might have perfected it. LOL)

You’re a blast, a great writer, an awesome friend for a good chuckle and if you’re a mirror hog, I know nothing. *blink* LOL

(See how I expertly avoided divulging my destructive behavior. *ducks and runs*)

    • Thank you for reminding me what I love about prime time TV, Diana. : )

Your avoidance mojo is strong Grasshopper! But hey, nothing wrong with keeping things to yourself. I’ve known lots of people over the years who wished I’d do a little more of that, LOL!.

      Thanks for commenting! : )

  • I’m so feeling those expectations with Life in Fusion to *biting nails*

Carol – I’m with you, Ethan is awesome in person (or on the phone).

  • Hey Ethan,
You always make me laugh – half pint indeed! I would’ve walked 3 miles uphill, in snow for a better choice of men. 😉

I have no witty stories, but I will say that when I was much younger, I had very unfair expectations of the people I met. Now at 50, I seem to be far more accepting of people as they are.

Oprah once said (and I’m paraphrasing) “listen to people when they tell you who they are the first time”. She went on to explain that she meant that people will show their true character fairly quickly, and the issues arise when we don’t accept it, and place our own expectations upon them. That really summarizes how I feel.

Don’t worry about our expectations for your work Ethan, just do your best and follow your heart. I’ll still love you even when Wave gives you 1 star because you used too many words.

    • “even when Wave gives you 1 star because you used too many words” – LMAO!! That would be pretty funny, actually.

Thanks for warm and fuzzies, TJ. You’re very sweet!

I usually lead with all my bad habits, that way if the guy turns and runs screaming I’ve wasted less time. lol

      • “Thanks for warm and fuzzies, TJ. You’re very sweet!”

And there we have it folks another hot man tells me I’m sweet. So are you gonna give me a fake phone number now too? That’s the usual MO. LOL

      • Ethan

I’ve never given 1 star because the book had too many words – but then I very rarely read books that are more than 100 WORDS let alone 314 fricking pages??????? Kidding!! Okay I read Cut & Run and that was almost 400 pages and it was about a serial killer so no fun there but I had months to read it. The authors have never heard the end of it. lol

Why can’t books be like texting? :)or Twitter? That works for most of the world. 🙂

        • That would be kinda funny though as a review: 1 Star Rating – This book had too many words.

You knew I was long-windy when you met me…or at least you found that out pretty quick, lol.

I think your just acting all upset about the length because your afraid I’ll go around telling people you like long ones. ; )

        • Cut and Run, “No fun there”?! Wave, it was a serial killer book! That’s where all the fun is!

Texting or Twitter? Paris Hilton, get off this damn site and go do another line of coke, but for my sake, please leave the video camera in the bag!

          • Paris Hilton? – good one Buda! LMAO I was thinking someone hacked Wave’s ID and was blogging crazy stuff. Imagine complaining that there were too many pages in LIF!

          • I knew you would get Cut and Run. What I meant was it was not the same kind of fun as Ethan’s books. You have to be seriously warped to consider the kind of books we like i.e. serial killers, to be fun.

I think books should be 10 pages tops so that I can say I read 1200 a year.

BTW I have a rec. for a very sexy book for you. I posted my review today. You should really, really get it – it’s hotter than most books I have read lately. lol

          • Wave, it’s a wonder you and I get along at all. lol I’d so much rather have a long, engrossing tale that takes me days to finish than a short one, as satisfying as it may be.

Just finished reading the review you posted – I’m on my way to DSP to load up my Wish List to purchase Monday. Very much looking forward to that one!

  • Tuesday!! TUESDAY! About frickin’ time!

Uh, did I say that out loud? Oops.

But seriously Ethan I’m glad–and I totally enjoy–the time and care you take with your stories. You’ve had me since Self Preservation and each and every book / story since has been fantastic.
But expectations? Well not the kind that’s going to end up with me disappointed. There’s something about your writing, your characters and your stories that always resonates with me.
Even your post above is something that I enjoy tremendously. 🙂

But then I’m a major book slut–not that that means I fall for anyone’s stories mind; it’s just that I have such a wide and diverse reading appetite. When one author works for me I think a lot of it’s because there’s something that comes through their writing that I can relate to. With you, part of it is your sense of humour. Man, you can make me laugh like nobody’s business.

I’m just very happy that on Tuesday–and I’m going to be putting EVERYTHING aside so that I can spend the day with Boone and Wade–I get to fall into another of your books that are so rich in all the things that matter that there’s no way that it’s not going to work for me. ‘Cause really you do make me laugh, a lot, and your characters always, one way or another, teach me about the importance of love, friends and family.

What’s not to love about that??

    • Kathy
You are like TJ – such a suck up. lol Ethan will eat this up and get pissed at me when I tell him that the book doesn’t live up to the hype, even if it’s about Boone and Wade.

He’s pobably primping in front of a mirror right about now practicing his acceptance speech for an imaginary award.

      • LOL! Now you know that’s not true, Wave. I came directly here from work to play over at your house today. I haven’t pulled, tucked, or primped a thing since about 6 a.m. : ).

      • lol… Yep, that’s me Wave; a suck up. 🙂

But, I’m an honest one…and really? I think you’re more than able to stand up to Ethan. ‘Sides, I find it hard to believe that you’ll be telling him anything of the sort. I’ve got confidence in him! And you’re already a fan, sooooo….. 😀

      • “You are like TJ – such a suck up.”

Hey, Hey, hey! What is this – pick on TJ day? Just cause I like the little sh@#’s writing doesn’t mean I’m a suck up. I’m not the one who gets to read his book a week before it’s published. I got nothing outta this deal but insulted by you and Ethan! Sweet – hurmph!

    • Thanks Kathy K! Have I ever mentioned how much I love book sluts!! Oh hell…who am I kidding…I love all sluts! : )

I think it’s awesome your getting to that point when things can once again be about you, at least for a little more of the time. And I’m so happy to hear the books connect for you on so many levels. I think that’s incredible, truly.

  • Hmmm, self destructive behaviour tied to expectations.
Would that be something like… ah, no… probably not.

Okay… BIG expectations in my marriage, at least the early years. Of course everything’s going to be hunky dory ’cause of COURSE he’s going to know exactly what I want / need and do everything the *right* way… which translated to doing them *my* way.
Funny thing about that, he had expectations too…and they weren’t really to fall in line with me and my ideas.

But almost 27 years of marriage, in just under a month, we’re back in the honeymoon stage. Of course our four kids are now grown and moved away–for now–and we’ve learned to live together with the give-and-take. And yeah, it’s been rougher sometimes than others, but being on this side of things… it’s pretty damned nice.

  • …as his come wrapped in the form of fearing the worst…

Sorry. My expectations started going all the wrong way with that sentence. At least they were safe expectations.

  • Thank you Ethan, I needed that laugh. Of course now you have gotten me thinking of all the men on Little House and what could have been. Who knows what might have occured between Dr. Baker, Reverand Alden, Mr. Edwards and unhappliy married Mr. Oleson on those cold winters night. These really aren’t great images to have in my head so I thought i would share. Anyway can’t wait until tuesday and I am glad its a longer book.

    • Thanks Amanda! I’m always happy to have hosted a laugh or two.

You watch…within a year someone will be releasing the first book in a new series: The Little Whore House on the Prairie – Book One

  • Good afternoon Ethan.

    Expectations…

I try not to have expectations of others because of the high expectations others have of me and how that can be draining, but it doesn’t always work. I think it’s hard when one consistently puts out high-quality whatever, so the anticipation is there to perform — heh heh, I said “hard,” “puts out,” “perform” in one sentence! 🙂 Like TJ, I think it’s gotten a little easier as I’ve gotten older, especially with the low expectations that come with those who often disappoint me, which is a bit sad.

As a reader, I do have expectations — both low and high — from various authors, and I can imagine the pressure a well-received writer is under when putting pen to paper. I don’t envy you or any of the goodies, but I can enjoy the fruits of those labours (as I am sure to do next week when LIF is released).

  • Ethan, not one of us on this earth is perfect. But it is my considered opinion that any man would be LUCKY to have you!
    **hugs**

Also, I CANNOT WAIT to read LIF! I heart Boone like whoa 😀

  • LMAO! Yay! More of the “Ethan & TJ Show”! You guys crack me up. I think I’ve surpassed today’s required laugh quota. 😀

Ethan, the only expectation I have when I read your books is that you’re going to make me laugh uncontrollably at inappropriate times – and you always deliver. You’d think I’d learn not to read certain books in certain places by now. Great post, awesome rock star hair, and can’t wait to read LiF. 🙂

    • Thanks L.C.! We all enjoy doing inappropriate things…timing be damned! : )

I’m so happy to know I’ve made you laugh, period. That’s the best compliment anyone could give me. Very much appreciated.

      That swe…exy, stud muffin, TJ. ; )

  • Buda

    >>I’d so much rather have a long, engrossing tale that takes me days to finish than a short one, as satisfying as it may be<< We ARE still talking about books, aren't we? Actually 250 pages for me is a satisfying read. I just seem to have had really long books lately - I'm not complaining but my eyes are. 🙁 I hope you enjoy that little story I suggested - great bedtime read if you get my drift (and I'm sure you did). lol
