Nathie Interview

Today I’m interviewing Nathie, a very talented and gifted photographer and painter. Zie speaks very little English so I had the brilliant idea of having Christian, our Webmaster, translate the questions and answers and I think it worked really well. You can see from hir pictures and book covers why I wanted to interview Nathie.

Could you start by telling us something about yourself?

Erzähle uns doch als erstes ein wenig über Dich selbst.

N. I’m an already seasoned vintage – born in 1971. I live in a beautiful country area. I couldn’t imagine for myself to live directly in a city. The nature around me is an important part of my inspirational process. I’m doing a lot of sports – jogging, biking, sword fencing. I write as a hobby, when I have the time I play classical guitar and I’m also doing chainmail jewelry and work with wood and stone. I love going to concerts and historical medieval shows and right now I’m looking for an Airsoft team in my area that does SWAT training. 🙂

Ich bin schon ein „alter Furz“ – Jahrgang 1971. Ich lebe mitten im Grünen. Ich könnte mir nicht vorstellen, direkt in einer Stadt zu leben. Die Natur um mich herum brauche ich zur Inspiration. Ich mache sehr viel Sport – joggen, biken, Schwertfechten. Ich schreibe als Hobby, ich spiele klassische Gitarre, wenn ich Zeit habe und knüpfe auch Chainmailschmuck und mache Holz- und Steinarbeiten. Ich gehe auch gerne zu Konzerten, Mittelaltermärkten und bin gerade auf der Suche nach einem Airsoft-Team in der Gegend, die SWAT-Training machen. 🙂

When did you first start painting? Did you paint as a child or did you wait until you became an adult?

Wann hast Du angefangen, zu malen? Hast Du schon als Kind gemalt oder hast Du damit erst im Erwachsenenalter angefangen?

I always loved drawing. I started drawing when I was 4 or 5 years old, maybe earlier, but in those days my canvas was the wallpaper or the floor. 😉 Later I attended an art school which offered the subjects product design, fine arts and also practical

crafts like stuccowork, wood engineering and metalwork. During that time I earned my living with portrait painting and airbrush works (mainly on cars). Everything without the help of a computer. Madness, I couldn’t imagine working that way any more. After that I worked in the advertising industry as a media designer and then I changed course and did a re-training to system and network administrator, especially for Unix server and Macintosh workstations. That was the biggest mistake of my life, I hardly had time anymore to do creative work and I missed doing that. Then about ten years ago I started drawing again. Without the help of a computer then but mainly with pencils, acrylic, copic markers and coloring pencils. About 4 years later I started drawing digitally with Adobe Photoshop CS6 and a Wacom-Intous-Tablet A5.

Ich habe schon immer gerne gemalt. Mit 4 oder 5 Jahren habe ich angefangen, vielleicht auch früher, aber da mussten die Tapeten oder der Fußboden herhalten. 😉 Später bin ich auf eine Kunstschule gegangen, die Fachrichtungen wie Produktdesign, fine arts und auch praktisches Handwerk wie Stuckarbeiten, Holz- und Metalltechik als Fächer hatte. Damals habe ich mir den Unterhalt mit Portraitzeichnungen und Airbrush (meistens auf Autos) verdient. Alles ohne Computer. Wahnsinn, das könnte ich mir heute nicht mehr vorstellen. Danach habe ich in der Werbebranche als Mediendesigner gearbeitet, und dann habe ich eine Umschulung auf System- und Netzwerk-Administration gemacht, Unix-Server und Mac-Workstations. Der Fehler meines Lebens, ich hatte kaum Zeit, kreativ tätig zu werden und habe es vermisst. Vor ca. 10 Jahren habe ich dann wieder angefangen, zu zeichnen. Damals ebenfalls noch ohne Computer. Acryl, Copics, Buntstifte waren meine bevorzugten Medien.Vor 6 Jahrn habe ich dann angefangen, digital zu malen. Da benutze ich Adobe Photoshop CS6 und ein Wacom-Intuous -Tablett A5.

You are obviously very talented but how did you transition from painting for pleasure into a career?

Du bist ganz offensichtlich sehr begabt, aber wann genau hast Du angefangen, Malen nicht nur als Hobby, sondern als Karriere zu verfolgen?

That was a gradual process. At first I did contract work only at the weekends, later I took a day off from my regular work once a week to do it, then two and finally… now I’m a freelancer. 😉 But I wouldn’t call myself gifted. It’s more the continuous practice and patience and having fun doing what you do.

Es ging so schleichend. Zuerst habe ich nur an den Wochenenden Aufträge bearbeitet, dann habe ich einen Tag die reguläre Arbeitsstelle gekürzt, dann zwei Tage und dann  – tja, jetzt bin ich Freelancer. 😉 Aber begabt würde ich nicht sagen. Eher ständiges Malen, üben und nochmals üben und Geduld und Spass an der Sache trifft es eher.

Was it difficult at first to make your mark in this very competitive field? If so, what are some of the impediments or issues and how did you overcome them?

War es am Anfang schwer, Dir in diesem offensichtlich sehr umkämpften Markt einen Namen zu machen? Falls ja, mit welchen Schwierigkeiten hattest Du besonders zu kämpfen und wie hast Du es geschafft, diese zu meistern?

No – I simply did my thing. I never showed around my portfolio – it may sound funny but the customers came to me. In years there never was an idle time. Nevertheless I’m always happy about new customers! 🙂

Nein – ich habe einfach mein Ding gemacht. Ich habe mich nie mit einem Portfolio ernsthaft beworben – so komisch wie es klingt, aber die Kunden kommen zu mir. Es gab seit Jahren keine Zeit, wo Leerlauf herrschte. Trotzdem bin ich immer glücklich über neue Kunden! 🙂

Do you use live models for your paintings or do they reside only in your imagination? If you do use live models, where do you find them because your models are so gorgeous?

Arbeitest du mit Modellen, die für Dich posieren, oder gibt es die Personen, die Du malst, nur in Deiner Fantasie? Wenn du mit richtigen Modellen arbeitest, wie findest Du diese, weil sie sind wirklich atemberaubend.

When I do contract work for a character design or a book cover the customers always have certain ideas in regard to the pose, setting and look of the character. Often they also give me reference pics which show which form/look of the face, hair cut or clothing they want. I work strictly according to these specifications because it’s what the customer wants. When I work on my own pics in most cases I have the character in my head, very seldom do I use references. To achieve a certain pose for my character or to get the light and shade right I always pose myself – which means doing a lot of funny poses in front of the mirror. 😉

Also, wenn ich Kundenaufträge bearbeite, dann haben die Kunden bei Characterdesigns/Buchcovern immer eine feste Vorstellung von Posen, Setting, Aussehen des Charakters. Oft sind auch Referenzfotos dabei, z.B. für Gesichtsform/Aussehen, Haarschnitt oder Kleidung. Da arbeite ich strikt nach, weils halt vom Kunden gewünscht ist. Wenn ich an meinen eigenen Bildern zeichne, habe ich die Charaktere immer im Kopf, da arbeite ich sehr selten mit Referenzen. Für Pose, Licht/Schatten modele ich immer selbst  – oder verrenke mich vor dem Spiegel dementsprechend. 😉

What is your creative process?

Wie läuft der kreative Prozess bei Dir ab?

Actually my creative process is quite funny, to say it mildly. I get up in the morning, read the description for a contract work, then I grab my iPod and go for a run for an hour. When I’m done with that I already have an almost finished picture in my head. Then I put it down on paper – to a file would be more accurate. Of course while I’m sketching the pic I often get new ideas which I work out and send to the customer as work in progress for approval. I’m a little bit embarrassed to tell but my own private pics are often based on ideas I have at quite funny places (the mall, a toilet, places where one normally has no sketch-book available) and I’m knocked off my feet by them. When I do my shopping this often leads to me forgetting half of the things I intended to buy. 😉

Der ist regelrecht komisch, um es gelinde gesagt auszudrücken. Ich stehe morgens auf, lese eine Beschreibung für eine Arbeit, dann nehme ich meinen iPod und gehe eine Stunde lang joggen. In der Zeit habe ich das Bild im Kopf schon fast fertig. Dann bringe ich es zu Papier  – bzw. in eine Datei. Wenn ich im Sketching-Prozess bin, kommen natürlich noch neue Ideen dazu. Das wird dann ausgearbeitet und immer wieder als Work-in Progress zum Kunden geschickt. Private Bilder sind oft  – ich mags gar nicht sagen – Einfälle, die spontan an komischen Orten passieren (Einkaufszentrum, Toilette, dort, wo man natürlich kein Sketchbuch dabei hat) und hauen mich da von den Socken. Beim Einkaufen vergesse ich dann immer die Hälfte. 😉

Your paintings are striking and unique, at least those I have seen. Tell us a little about the medium you use to achieve a few of your effects. Do you use oils, watercolours or acrylics in your paintings?

Deine Bilder sind herausstechend und einzigartig, zumindest die, welche ich bisher gesehen habe. Erzähle uns doch ein bisschen, wie Du diese besonderen Effekte erzielst. Malst Du Deine Bilder mit Öl-, Wasser- oder Acrylfarben?

You can’t compare digital drawing/painting with traditional techniques. In one file you for example can mix brushes with oil paint emulations or acrylic emulation with textures, things you could never do with traditional techniques. In addition to that with a digital picture you can use a zoom so you can get more details into it. It takes ages to develop your own special technique and one often gets simply confused by the wide range of possibilities digital painting offers compared to a traditional acrylic picture. One has all possible colors available, can simply overdraw something with a lighter color without the darker color shining through or the colors mixing – something which totally confused me at the beginning. 😉 Effects? Well, I work with textures and my own brushes a lot but sometimes I simply enjoy to work with a standard brush or even to sit in front of a good old canvas. The cat picture here (Meo.jpg) was done with traditional acrylic technique and it’s the original size, too.

Digitales Zeichnen/Malen kann man nicht mit traditionellen Medien vergleichen. In einder Datei kann man zum Beispiel Brushes mit Ölfarbenemulation oder Acrylfarbenemulation oder Texturen mischen, was tradititionell niemals ginge. Dazu kommt bei einem digitalen Bild noch der Zoomfaktor, wo man noch mehr Details in ein Bild reinpacken kann. Bis man da seinen eigenen Stil entwickelt

hat, dauert es ewig, man wird manchmal total verworren, von den Möglichkeiten, die man im Gegensatz zu einem Acrylfarbenbild hat. Man hat echt alle Farben, die man möchte, kann einfach hell übermalen ohne dass es dreckig wirkt – das verwirrte mich echt erst zu Anfang. 😉

Besondere Effekte – hm, ich arbeite viel mit Texturen und selbstgemachten Brushes. Aber manchmal genieße ich es einfach auch, mit einem

einzigen Standardpinsel zu malen – oder mich auch vor die gute, alte Leinwand zu setzen. Das Katzenbild hier (Meo.jpg) ist mit Acrylfarbe traditionell gemalt, und das ist auch die Originalgröße.

 
What else would you like to tell us about your painting?

Was möchtest Du uns noch über Deine Bilder erzählen?

I actually tend to let my pictures talk for me. I mean, illustrations and book covers tell the viewer about the content of the book. My own pictures, I simply draw for myself, just… come from within me. (cables.jpg)

Eigentlich lasse ich meine Bilder am liebsten für sich selbst sprechen. OK, Illustrationen / Buchcover sagen einfach was über den Inhalt des Buches aus – was den Leser erwarten wird. Bilder, die ich einfach so für mich male, kommen so… aus mir heraus. (cables.jpg)
