the backup boyfriendRiver Jaymes is brand new M/M author and as you all know, I love to promote authors in this genre whose books I think deserve it, especially newbies. When I read her first book, Brad’s Bachelor Party, I fell in love with her writing and her characters but I wondered if that book was a fluke, as often happens. I became a fan when I read her follow-up story The Backup Boyfriend which I loved, loved, loved and despite everything I have on my plate this month I ‘m taking a time out to introduce this author to you readers as someone whose books deserve your consideration. I think she’s definitely someone to watch.  With this in mind I emailed River on the weekend and asked her if she would like to be profiled here, and she said she would be happy to meet all of the readers who drop by the site.

Here’s River’s profile:

First off, thank you for having me, Wave!  Like everyone else, I’m sad to see this site close but I totally understand how much time a project like this would take.  You shall be missed.

Now, a little about me. I’m married with three wonderful kids and my day job consists of working one crazy-ass week a month as a physician in a bush town in Southwest Alaska – usually on call for 36 hours and then off for 12. Think Northern Exposure plus ER, minus the beautiful mountains and George Clooney 😆 The rest of my time I’m a stay-at-home mom who tries ( and often fails) to juggle kids and writing and hubby demands.

I wrote straight romance for a major publisher for three years and my books were always very hero-focused. About two years ago I hit a mental wall in my writing, took a break, and discovered fanfiction (Spirk!). I then transitioned to reading M/M novels and, suddenly, my muse was reborn! It was like a huge light bulb went off when I realized that I could have TWO heroes in every book. Score!

Three random facts about me:

I once rode in a Black Hawk helicopter in the middle of a blizzard to retrieve an acutely sick infant in a village. Any wonder why I love my job? (The baby did fine).

I grew up with three older brothers and was a total tomboy..

My husband is always my first beta reader and misses the women in my books. I don’t. 😀

Here are the blurbs of River James’ books:

Brad’s Bachelor Partybradsbachelorparty

In college, geeky med student Cole Winston fell for his best friend, Brad Kelly. The bold, brash charmer was everything Cole wasn’t: confident, popular, and straight. Unfortunately Cole’s secret blows up in his face, and he walks away. Years later, when Brad needs help, he calls Cole. Now a respected trauma surgeon, Cole has learned not to risk his heart and is ready to be Brad’s friend again.

Things go well until Brad asks Cole to be his best man. With both his parents dead, Brad never would have survived college or his brother’s rounds of drug rehab without Cole. The five-year gap in their friendship was painful. Now Brad’s got his best friend back, a kick-ass job, and is engaged to the CEO’s daughter. Life is great…until a hot encounter at his bachelor party leaves both men reeling. The sexual tension between the two is off the charts.

Brad has commitments he needs to keep, but how can he go through with the wedding when he can’t stop thinking about Cole? And how can Cole stand beside his friend and watch him get married, especially now that he realizes he still loves Brad?

The Backup Boyfriend

Book One – The Boyfriend Chronicles

Professionally, Dr. Alec Johnson has almost reached his goals. As this year’s recipient of a humanitarian award with his ex, Dr. Tyler Hall, Alec’s work with the homeless is about to be recognized. Unfortunately, his personal life sucks because now he has to attend several events alongside Tyler—with his ex’s new boyfriend in tow. In an attempt to lift his mood and break out of his rut, Alec purchases a motorcycle he has no idea how to start.

Dylan Booth doesn’t have time for Dr. Clueless and his fickle 1964 Harley, but the cocky mechanic can’t say no to the request for help. Having spent his teen years on the streets, and losing his best friend to HIV,

Dylan decides teaching the do-gooder how to ride is the least he can do. But watching Alec flounder in his ex’s company throws Dylan into protector mode, and the confirmed hetero introduces himself as Alec’s new boyfriend.

The ex suspects Dylan is lying.

Alec claims Dylan’s plan is insane.

And Dylan’s not sure he can fake being gay.

But he’s a master bullshitter, and the phony PDA soon turns ultra-hot. Alec can’t afford to get attached, and Dylan’s learned everyone eventually leaves. Unfortunately, playing the backup boyfriend is starting to feel

I’ve included two of my favorite photos of our little corner of the world. The first on the right is a picture of the Northern Lights over the tundra taken by a friend of mine.

The second (above left) is a recent picture of a herd of Musk Ox near the Kuskokwim River, the first time they’ve ever been spotted in this area!

    Hi River!
Nice to meet you! I’m just now reading your “Backup Boyfriend” and loving it. I’ll definitely love to rea about Tyler; he’s an asshole but I can’t help wondering how he became that way.
Your job description sounds very interesting. I’d love that job too, I’m sure!
And those pictures are gorgeous, particularly the northern lights.

      Hey Feliz

Doesn’t River’s life sound incredibly adventurous? Not only is she a doctor in frozen Alaska but she’s a pediatrician, which must be such a wonderful and rewarding career.

I absolutely loved Dylan. My review of The Backup Boyfriend will be posted later today.
Maybe we’ll understand Tyler when his book is published as it’s next.

Feliz! Lovely to meet you. Yes, Tyler has a bit of a *ahem* complicated background. He needs someone to come along and shake him up LOL. Memphis is the perfect guy to do just that : )

I love the job mostly because there is never a dull moment and the people are wonderful. The photo of the Northern Lights was taken a few months ago by a friend of mine. It’s one of my favorites because I love the red on green. It reminded me of the holidays : )

Hope you enjoy the rest of the book and Happy Holidays!

Hi River 🙂 I just want to say thank you for your books. I really enjoy reading them. Thank you for such awesome characters and great drama and sizzling romance. I can’t wait to pick another one of your books 🙂

  • Lasha

I loved the first two books. I can’t wait for the sequel to Backup Boyfriend. 🙂

Spirk? Please tel me you wrote K/S fanfiction. Please. I am always looking for good Kirk/Spock bonding fic. :hearts01:

    • River Jaymes

So pleased you enjoyed the books, Lasha!

And I’m a HUGE Spirk fan. I’ve never written any K/S fanfiction, but I’ve read just about everything I could find. There are some absolutely fabulous authors out there writing wonderful fanfiction. I love starting a story already knowing the characters’ personalities and then seeing what the author does with it. So much fun : )

      Thanks for stopping by!

Thanks, Karen! I’m thrilled you loved the story. I had an absolute blast writing it – except on the days when the boys were misbehaving lol.

      Thanks for stopping by!

Hey, Jen! Glad you enjoyed the book! Yes, my hubby has read everything I’ve ever written. My books are better because of his input. Though, he really does miss the women LOL.

      Thanks for stopping by,

      River

  • Abbi Wilder

    Hey, Amy!

OMG, she mentioned Spirk! I vote for her to write some SGA fanfic. Do you plan on writing anything set in Alaska? Can’t wait to read BackUp Boyfriend!

    Abbi 🙂
