But Alex’s aristocratic ex stirs up trouble in the press for George and his humble family, and Alex realizes he has to get real about having a boyfriend from the wrong side of town.
While George acknowledges his modest upbringing, he doesn’t let anyone insult his family. Life’s no fairy tale, and regardless of his royal title, Alex might destroy his one chance for happily ever after.
I really enjoyed this story! Anna Martin continues to engage me. Alex picks George up in a bar, and they have a smokin’ hot night together.
Months later George sees Alex on TV and discovers Alex is a prince, distant in line, but a prince still, of the Netherlands. George is from a “normal,” non-royal, working-class family. Well fuck a duck – he screwed royalty! I might have some feelings about that. I’m not sure what, but I’d have something going on in my head.
Fast forward a few months to a charity event, and George comes face to face with Alex. Where Alex proceeds to ask him out. And so begins the dating tale of these two.
What I liked about this story was how REAL it felt. Martin does a really good job of bringing me into their world where nothing felt contrived. Alex is privileged, yes, but he isn’t an arrogant douche. He’s likable.
It’s a slow-burn romance here, and it was delicious. It develops over time. They get to know each other. They actually DATE!! And we see it all unfold.

I’m not sure I’d be able to read this with a straight face. I am from the Netherlands and the von Amsberg part of the royal family is not distant in line at all. In fact, Claus von Amsberg married Queen Beatrix and their oldest son, Willem-Alexander (who allegedly goes by Alex for his friends) was crowned king a few years ago. I wouldn’t be able to read this and not picture his classic Dutch Boy looks (and his lovely wife and daughters).
Lol! That’s too funny! In the book, the von Amsbergs are the royal family. But Alex is the nephew of the king. And the King already has sons. So that’s how he’s “distant” in line. I didn’t realize Martin chose names that were in use in reality!
I find that an odd choice, really. If you’re using a fictional royal family, why use a real country and the names of a real royal family?
Do the Netherlands feature in this book at all” Because if so, I am going to have to read it after all.
No, I don’t recall any short trips there. It’s all in Edinburgh.
