Welcome to the MM Veterans Day Scavenger Hunt
Today I am hosting M.A. Church
My Favorite Vet by M.A. Church
When Gigi from Gay Book review contacted me about our posts for the Veteran’s Day Scavenger Hunt, she suggested several ideas, but one caught my attention immediately. It was the one about my favorite vet. My dad popped into my head. Now, the odd thing about that is he passed away twenty years ago. Yep, I said twenty years.
By the time I came along, my parents were middle-aged. Hell, my dad was in his 50s. What’s interesting about this is my dad was a WWII vet. I grew up with stories of his time over in the Philippines. Some of my earliest memories were the yearly Veteran reunions my parents traveled to. Good Lord, by the time I was thirteen. I’d already been to states, thanks to these reunions.
Unfortunately, I didn’t pay that close attention to the war stories. I was a kid and had other things on my mind. Little did I know just exactly what I was missing. I regret that now and it makes me sad.
But there are things I do remember. I remember daddy was an MP. I remember him saying he was very fortunate, and the fact was he didn’t have too many life-threatening situations while in the Philippines. What is really neat is I have all of the pictures he took during that timeframe.
He also brought back a rather long mother-of-pearl stone he later had set in white gold. It’s really the only heirloom of our family. When my mother passed in 2010, it came down to me, as did the letter of condolence sent out to family members signed by Pres. Bill Clinton. I have that, and a shadowbox with my father’s medals, in the den.
Not only is it cool to look back and see that time, it’s also a very important part of our history. The one clear memory I do have is that Dad talked about that time with pride in his voice about his service to our country. ?
Rapid Fire Q&A
-
1. Chocolate/Vanilla
I’m a chocolate fiend, no doubt about it. I can happily nibble on the stuff all day, every day!
2. Coke/Pepsi
Oh, that’s an easy one: Coke. All I drink is Coke. Coke and chocolate are perfect together too. *grin*
3. Morning/Night
Night. I’ve always been a night owl. Now that I no longer work outside the home, I’m up all hours of the night.
4. Coffee/Tea
Neither. See # 2 lol.
5. Summer/Winter
Summer. I live in the South, and I’ve never adjusted to cold weather. When it snows here, the schools shut down. And it doesn’t take much, either!
