This book threw me completely. Just when I thought I figured out who the killer was and why, there was another major twist. And the thing that really stick with me is when the true killer was revealed I actually found myself not only hurting for the killer but almost understanding the reasons that led up to the killer making the decisions he/she did. I will be honestly and say that I found myself in tears for not only the characters in this book that was affected by the killer but I was heartbroken and in tears for the killer. That is not something I can say that has ever happened before to me, feeling sympathetic towards the killer and almost understanding why they decided to do the things they did because of the circumstances that surrounded them and shaped them to make the decision they made.
James is a lot stronger then he gives himself for. His downfall in my opinion, which is not a bad thing in the least, is he loves with his whole heart. Not only romantically but also with just about everyone in his life. This quality about him is what makes him a good detective. With his cases he does the same, puts all of him into and looks at the cases in a personal level. I think that is why his instincts are so good.
When James met and fell for Ben I was really happy about that. I thought that they would complete each other in a way no one else would but then I kept reading and I really started resenting Ben. I felt like he was trying to have his cake and eat it too where James was concerned. I started feeling like Ben was intentionally pushing to see just how far he could go to see what James would take and how much he could push him until he would break. Ben knowing that James did not believe in multiple partners and starting a relationship with him anyway and Ben not stopping seeing people on the side was bad enough but it was even worse when he started parading them in front of James.
This was the point that I actually started hooing that James would decide to walk away from Ben and chose Steggie instead because Steggie truly cared for James. You could tell that Steggie fell head over heals for James just by the way he acted towards him and I truly believe that Steggie would have given up his porn career if he was given a chance at a relationship with James.
This book truly took more twist and turns then I expected it to ever take. That did not ever stop either. It seemed every time something would happen there was another right around the corner that was waiting to rip another spread of All the characters hearts out. I have never read anything by Dal Macclean in the past but if this book is a glimpse of what Dal’s books are like, well then sign me up because I am now a fan.
