To all Authors and Publishers of M/M or GLBT Romance:

The organizers of the GayRomLit Retreat would like to cordially invite you to the first, of what we hope will become an annual literary event that features Gay Romance in Literature. This is about bringing you and the reader together for an event unlike any other. From the Bourbon Orleans hotel, located in the famous French Quarter to the River Boat book signing cruise on the Creole Queen, we’ve designed and organized events and parties taking full advantage of the location while providing you with a multitude of opportunities to mix with readers, other authors, and publishers.

There will be no seminars or workshops – this is about showcasing you the authors and publishers, along with the genre we all love and continue to support. With registration for everyone set at $100 per person we want you all to understand that this is not a money making venture for any of the organizers.

All money collected will be passed along to attendees by way of food, goods, and/or services.

We hope you all will join us down in New Orleans, October 13 – 16 of 2011, to get Steamy in the Big Easy. Who Dat!?!

    Reader Registration will open sometime in February after we know which authors and publishers will be sponsoring which events. The link for the hotel is up on the website, though, so anyone who knows they will be going can go ahead and book their rooms now.

      There will be a charge for this freebie – I’m sure the boyz in the hot tub will come up with something – maybe a bite on your cheek, and I don’t mean your face Ethan. 😉

  • Okay, I can see what writers and publishers will get out of this– a captive audience to sell to– but if there’s no panels, what do readers get out of spending $100 for this?

    • Kirsten, over on the author’s registration page (http://gayromlit.com/authorevents.php) they have a list of events authors can sponsor. There’s a similar page for publishers. Everything’s tentative right now as they need to see what authors and publishers are sponsoring, which will be revealed when reader registration is opened in a month or so. Does that help answer your question?

    • Hi Kirsten – part of the reason we don’t have reader registration open at this time is because we don’t know exactly what we’re going to be able to offer. Once Author and Publisher Registration has closed we’ll be able to set up the actual EVENTS pages and you’ll be able to see what we’re going to offer.

      I will say, that what we’re hoping to accomplish here is a much more interactive experience, where you’ll be able to meet and socialize directly with authors in both larger and smaller groups.

      This isn’t really about selling anything to anyone since I assume anyone going to an M/M retreat is already a reader of the genre. In fact, we’ll be recommending that readers bring their own copies should they want them signed by an author during the Riverboat Book Signing Cruise.

      For me, it’s about being able to shake a readers hand and personally thank them for buying my book. That’s why I’m going and why I wanted to be invlolved. I’d venture to guess that’s why every other author and publisher who’ll be attending will want to go as well.

      But do stay tuned to the website. In a month or so you’ll be able to read more about the individual events and which authors will be there to sponsor them. Hopefully you’ll decide you’re getting a lot for that $100. : )

  • I’m yellow with envy.
    The Romanians need a visa to enter in USA and a well founded reason to visit the country.
    Even with a good reason, you have to wait months and months.

    Can you imagine the faces of US Embassy employees if I tell them I want to attend Gay Rom Lit Retreat?

  • Hmm, I’m not too far from New Orleans, so I might be able to make it. We’ll see, I guess. Though I can already imagine the good times that will be had by all 😉

  • This is a great idea. A bunch of people from the Goodreads M/M Romance group got together in New Orleans for Southern Decadence last year and we had a blast! Definitely make sure you promote this event over at that site as well. I can’t wait. 🙂

    • LOL! I’ve heard MANY stories about Southern Decadence, Diane. I can only imagine. : ) I do so love the French Quarter.

  • Here’s another reason for me to start interacting on blogs. I would love to go to this – I follow Ethan’s blog/group and have read all his books as well as many by the other authors. I suppose it would be better if they know who I am? So when I follow them around, maybe they won’t have me arrested?

  • I’m already registered. Naomi, alas, could not face the lengthy bus trip.

    I haven’t been to New Orleans since I was in single digits and I’m looking forward to it. My dad practically squeed when I told him we were .2 miles from Cafe DuMond.

    Looks like I’m rooming with S.L. Armstrong and K. Piet.

    • The hotel is beautiful, Angela. Right behind the cathedral and Jackson Square. The location is perfect. Like 2 blocks to Cafe DuMond, if I remember correctly. : )

      • Meh. A hotel is a hotel is a hotel. If I don’t have a panic attack from the elevator (Thank you, Atlanta Marriot) they’re all about the same: a bed, a bathroom and a place to stash my stuff and/or decompress.

        I’m more about the people and programming at conventions.

          I’ve been to NO before Katrina and it’s like nothing else in the US, even the hotels are different. You can’t miss the opportunity to visit the French Quarter, have beignettes and cafe au lait at 2.00 A.M. and ride the street cars. You should also visit some of the old plantations.

          • I’ve been going to New Orleans several times a year since the mid-90’s. It’s my home away from home. In fact my boyfriend and I are getting married in the French Quarter in May!

          • I’m looking forward to beignettes, but I hate coffee. There is no money or time for side trips. I doubt I’ll leave the hotel much, in all honesty. It’s work, not a vacation.

  • I would love to attend this and meet everyone and see and experience New Orleans for the first time. I’ve traveled quite a bit, but somehow have never gotten there. Will tentatively plan on being there.
    Will there be dancing? Hair flinging? 🙂

    • We will have a special Yahoo Group set up for attendees that will have a database for people looking for roomies…you know…in case Lynn doesn’t take the hint : )

          Of course it’s nine months till the Retreat…and with gay men, single now may not be single later. You could end up, um…stuck in the middle? ; )

        • Cole, honey, I’d LOVE to share with you, but I agree that maybe you need a nice (single) gay boy to room with, not a middle-aged woman who could wreck chances of you getting lai…er, meeting another nice (single) gay boy. 😉 Let’s talk as it gets closer.   • Coming to my town is the best way to host anything and this sounds like a blast! Can’t wait to meet a few of my favorite authors.

    But how do you get autographs for your ebooks?

    OH and I am more than happy to give advice on hotels and activities if people need suggestions!

  • Ok, so Wave has chastised me for being absent again. But this sounds like a really neat idea. I’m within in driving distance, but I need to find a good excuse to tell my dad where I’m going and what it is for. I know, the joys of the gay closeted man.

  • Thinking about coming (though I don’t know if I could convince anyone to come with me!), but I went to make a hotel reservation and the room block is fully booked. The hotel told me there are still plenty of rooms and the organizers could call to increase the size of the block – until then, though, the rooms are available only at much higher rates. Any chance of doing this? (I sent an email through the website, too, but figured I’d try here as well in case the organizers are still following…)
