Jeff Castle had inherited his car restoration business a year ago when he wanted a change from the high tech fast track which was fast becoming quick sand. While some may call it a glorified junk yard, to him and lovers of classic “muscle cars” of the sixties and early seventies it was heaven. On the way to pick up another car he sees Mike walking on the road, and even though he never picked up hitchhikers he offers him a lift, despite the fact that his appearance didn’t exactly give out the right vibes. Turns out Mike knows a little bit about cars, and muscle cars in particular, so Jeff impulsively offers him a job in his shop.

Over the next two weeks they get to know each other and find out that they have more in common than their backgrounds would indicate. Mike confided that he was recently released from prison after serving 3 hellish years and even though Jeff’s background was more traditional he was very understanding of Mike’s ordeal. Gradually they begin to trust each other and develop a friendship until one day when a thunderstorm forces Jeff to seek shelter in Mike’s mobile home and the emotions that were simmering below the surface burst into flames. The sex between them is very emotional and hot and they are both blown away. But there is someone from Mike’s past who is determined to cause trouble. Will their fledgling relationship survive?

I really liked the characterizations in Muscle Car Man as Mike’s and Jeff’s emotions were easy to read and the author, Deirdre O’Dare, makes good use of dialogue and atmosphere to set the stage and the mood. Jeff’s gentleness toward Mike when they have sex, to try and make up for prison and everything else that went wrong in his life, was very poignant. There’s a whole lot more to the book but you will have to read it to get the full story. Muscle Car Man was a very enjoyable read that I think any fan of the genre would enjoy.
